Step 1 – Draw the Basic Cup Structure
- Start by sketching a horizontal oval at the top of your page to represent the opening of the cup.
- Lightly draw two slanted vertical lines extending downward from the sides of the oval, narrowing slightly toward the bottom.
- Close the form with a curved line at the base to indicate the bottom of the cup.
- Add a faint horizontal guideline near the bottom to help align the base evenly.
- Keep all lines light and sketchy, as this step focuses purely on proportion and perspective.
- Ensure the top oval is wider than the bottom, giving the cup a stable and realistic shape.
- Avoid adding any thickness, shading, or details at this stage; this is only the foundational framework.
Step 2 – Add Thickness and Depth to the Cup
- Draw a second oval just inside the top opening to show the rim thickness of the cup.
- Refine the outer contour lines, making them smoother and more confident.
- Slightly round the bottom edge to give the cup a solid, three-dimensional feel.
- Begin adding light shading along one side of the cup to suggest a light source.
- Use short, controlled pencil strokes that follow the curve of the cup’s surface.
- Darken the inner rim slightly to create depth inside the cup.
- Add subtle shading beneath the cup to suggest it resting on a surface.
- Maintain clean edges while gradually increasing contrast for a more realistic form.
Step 3 – Draw the Handle and Final Shading
- Attach the handle to the side of the cup using two curved lines that form a soft “C” shape.
- Add thickness to the handle by drawing a parallel inner curve.
- Ensure the handle connects smoothly to the cup body at both the top and bottom.
- Deepen shading inside the cup opening to suggest liquid or interior shadow.
- Strengthen shadows along the lower half of the cup to emphasize weight and roundness.
- Add cross-hatching or layered strokes to enhance texture without overpowering the drawing.
- Darken the cast shadow beneath the cup to anchor it firmly on the surface.
- Erase unnecessary construction lines and sharpen the final outline where needed.
- Review the entire drawing for balance, smooth curves, and consistent lighting.
