How To Draw a Graduation Hat
I have created this simple and easy drawing of a graduation hat. Check the steps down below.
Step-By-Step Tutorial on How To Draw a Graduation Hat
Step 1: Draw a Diamond
Start by drawing a large diamond shape (a square rotated 45 degrees). This will form the flat top of the graduation cap, also known as the mortarboard. Make sure the lines are straight and symmetrical. Keep the proportions balanced, as this shape will guide the rest of your drawing. If needed, lightly sketch guidelines first to help maintain even angles.

Step 2: Add the Sides
From the lower left and right edges of the diamond, draw two short vertical lines downward. Then connect the bottom ends of these lines with a slightly angled horizontal line. This creates the thickness of the mortarboard and gives it a three-dimensional appearance. Keep the lines clean and consistent to maintain a neat structure.

Step 3: Draw the Cap Base
Under the mortarboard, sketch the rounded band that sits on the graduate’s head. Draw a curved horizontal line beneath the side edges, then connect it with a parallel curved line below to form the cap’s band. Close the sides with short vertical curves. This rounded base should look slightly cylindrical to create depth.

Step 4: Add the Button
At the center of the diamond shape, draw a small circle. This represents the button that holds the tassel in place. Position it carefully in the middle to keep the cap looking balanced. The circle should be proportionate — not too large, but clearly visible.

Step 5: Draw the Tassel
From the button, draw a thin line extending toward one side of the cap. This line should slightly curve to show natural movement. At the end of the line, draw a small bundle shape to form the tassel threads. Add a few vertical strokes within the bundle to give it texture and detail.

Step 6: Add Details and Shading
Refine your drawing by darkening the final outlines and erasing any unnecessary guidelines. Add light shading under the mortarboard and along the cap band to create dimension. You can also shade the top surface slightly darker for a polished look. Finally, clean up the edges to ensure the graduation hat looks crisp and complete.
