How To Draw a Donut

Here’s a step-by-step process on how to draw a donut.

Note: This is a digital drawing which I have made on Ibis Paint X. However you can replicate this drawing in any app or paper as well.

Step 1: Draw the Outer Circle

Begin by drawing one large circle in the center of your page. This will form the outside edge of the donut. Try to keep the circle smooth and fairly even, but it does not need to be perfectly round. A slightly imperfect shape can make your donut look more natural and hand-drawn.

Step 2: Add the Donut Hole

Draw a smaller circle inside the large circle, placing it close to the center. This smaller circle creates the donut hole. Leave plenty of space between the inner and outer circles so the donut looks thick and soft. Keep your pencil lines light so you can easily adjust the shape if necessary.

Step 3: Draw the Dripping Icing

Add a wavy line across the upper half of the donut to create the bottom edge of the icing. Make some curves longer than others so the frosting appears to drip naturally. Allow the icing line to curve around the donut hole as well, giving the frosting a soft, flowing appearance.

Step 4: Add the Sprinkles

Draw several small sprinkles across the icing. Use short rounded lines and tiny circles, placing them in different directions to create variety. Spread them out rather than making them perfectly even. Keep the sprinkles mostly inside the frosted area so it is easy to see which part of the donut is decorated.

Step 5: Add Depth and Extra Details

Refine the outline and add extra curved lines around the outer edge and inside the donut hole. These lines help show the thickness and rounded shape of the donut. Add a few light contour or shading marks where needed, especially along the lower edge, to make the drawing look more three-dimensional.

Step 6: Color and Finish the Donut

Finish your drawing by adding color. Use a warm golden-brown shade for the donut and a bright pink color for the icing. Color the sprinkles with several cheerful shades for contrast. Add slightly darker areas around the edges and donut hole, along with small highlights on the icing, to give your finished donut extra depth and shine.
