How to Draw a Squirrel?

Here’s a step by step process on how to draw a squirrel.

Note: This is a digital drawing which I have made on Ibis Paint X. However you can replicate this drawing in any app or paper as well.

Step 1: Draw the Basic Shapes

Begin by lightly drawing a circle for the squirrelโ€™s head. Below it, add a larger oval for the body, slightly tilted to create a natural sitting pose. Keep your pencil lines soft and loose because these simple shapes are only guidelines that will help establish the squirrelโ€™s overall proportions.

Step 2: Add the Head, Body, and Tail

Use the basic shapes to start forming the squirrelโ€™s silhouette. Add two pointed ears at the top of the head and shape a small muzzle at the front. Sketch the chest, belly, and feet, then draw a large curved tail behind the body, curling it upward toward the head.

Step 3: Sketch the Face and Legs

Refine the squirrelโ€™s head by adding a large round eye, a tiny nose, and a gentle mouth line. Draw the front legs reaching forward and shape the hind legs near the bottom of the body. Continue refining the ears, paws, belly, and fluffy tail while keeping your lines light.

Step 4: Refine the Outline and Add the Acorn

Now create a cleaner outline over your earlier sketch. Give the ears, cheeks, body, and tail slightly jagged edges to suggest soft fur. Add whiskers and define the paws more clearly. Draw a simple acorn between the squirrelโ€™s front paws so it looks as though the squirrel is holding it.

Step 5: Add Fur and Small Details

Add short, fine pencil strokes throughout the squirrelโ€™s body to create a furry texture. Pay extra attention to the large tail, following its curved shape with longer flowing lines. Add details inside the ears, around the eye, and on the paws. Finish the acorn by drawing its textured cap.

Step 6: Color the Finished Squirrel

Erase any remaining construction lines before adding color. Use warm reddish-orange or brown shades for the squirrelโ€™s body and tail, leaving the chest and belly lighter. Add darker tones inside the ears and along the tail for depth. Color the acorn brown, then add gentle shading to complete your squirrel drawing.
