How To Draw a Cat Face
Here are the steps.
Step 1 – Draw the Basic Head Shape
- Begin by lightly sketching a large circle on your paper.
- This circle represents the overall shape of the cat’s head.
- Try to keep the circle smooth and evenly rounded, as this will determine how balanced the face looks.
- Use a light pencil pressure so the lines can be erased or adjusted later.
- At this stage, avoid adding any details; focus only on getting the proportions right.
- The circle should be large enough to comfortably fit facial features like eyes, nose, and mouth later on.

Step 2 – Add Guidelines and Ears
- Draw a vertical line down the center of the circle to divide the face into left and right halves.
- Add a horizontal line across the middle of the circle to help position the eyes.
- These guidelines ensure symmetry when placing facial features.
- On top of the circle, sketch two triangular ear shapes, one on each side.
- The ears should be slightly curved at the base to blend naturally with the head.
- Keep the ear outlines light and simple, as they will be refined later.
- This step helps establish the cat’s recognizable silhouette.

Step 3 – Sketch the Facial Features
- Along the horizontal guideline, draw two round or oval eyes, placing them evenly on both sides of the vertical line.
- The eyes should be fairly large to give the cat a cute and friendly expression.
- Inside each eye, add a darker pupil, leaving small highlights to suggest shine.
- Below the eyes, on the vertical guideline, draw a small nose, usually shaped like a soft triangle.
- From the bottom of the nose, sketch a short vertical line downward.
- Add a gentle curved line on each side to form a simple smiling mouth.
- At this stage, facial features should still look soft and sketchy, not fully detailed.

Step 4 – Refine Details and Finalize the Face
- Inside each ear, draw smaller inner ear shapes to add depth.
- Darken the outlines of the eyes and enhance the pupils to make them stand out.
- Refine the nose and mouth, smoothing the curves for a clean look.
- Add whiskers on both sides of the face using short, straight lines extending outward.
- Slightly adjust the bottom of the circle to give the cheeks a softer, fluffier appearance.
- Erase any remaining guidelines that are no longer needed.
- Go over the final lines with firmer pressure to complete the drawing.
- Optionally, you can add light shading to give the face more dimension.
