How to Draw a Whale?

Here’s a step by step process on how to draw a whale.

Note: This is a digital drawing which I have made on Ibis Paint X. However you can replicate this drawing in any app or paper as well.

Step 1: Draw the Whaleโ€™s Body

Begin by drawing a large, smooth, curved shape for the whaleโ€™s body. Make the front end wide and rounded to form the head, then gradually narrow the shape toward the back. Keep the top and bottom lines gently curved so the whale looks soft, friendly, and easy to recognize.

Step 2: Add the Tail

At the narrow end of the whaleโ€™s body, draw the tail. Create a short upward curve for the tail base, then add two rounded, leaf-like flukes pointing outward. Keep both sides similar in size. Connect the tail smoothly to the body so it looks like one continuous shape.

Step 3: Draw the Eye, Smile, and Fin

Add a small round eye near the front of the whaleโ€™s head and place a tiny highlight inside it. Draw a gentle curved line for the smile. Next, add one pectoral fin underneath the body using a long, rounded shape that curves slightly backward to suggest movement through the water.

Step 4: Add the Belly Details

Draw several long, curved lines along the lower front portion of the whale to create the familiar belly grooves. Keep the lines evenly spaced and follow the curve of the body. Add the second pectoral fin on the opposite side, making part of it slightly hidden to create a natural sense of depth.

Step 5: Draw the Blowhole and Water

Add a small blowhole on top of the whaleโ€™s back, slightly behind the head. From the blowhole, draw several thin curved lines extending upward like a fountain. Add a few rounded water droplets around the lines. These simple details make the whale look playful and bring more action to the drawing.

Step 6: Color and Finish the Whale

Finish your drawing by coloring the whale with blue, blue-gray, or any shade you like. Leave the belly lighter so the details remain visible. Add gentle shading around the fins and tail for depth. Finally, draw bubbles, small waves, or ocean lines around the whale to complete the underwater scene.
