How to Draw an Ornament
Drawing an ornament sketch is less about perfection and more about building it step by step with patience and observation. In this approach, I focus on breaking the drawing into simple, manageable shapes first—starting with a basic circle—before gradually refining it into a more detailed and polished form. This method helps reduce overwhelm and makes the process feel natural, even if you’re just starting out.
Step by Step Process of Drawing an Ornament
1. Draw the base shape
Start with a light circle or oval — this will be the main body of the ornament.

2. Add the top cap and hook
Sketch a small rectangle or trapezoid on top of the circle to represent the metal cap. Add a small loop above the cap.

3. Add decorative patterns
Draw designs like stripes, zigzags, dots, swirls, or floral patterns inside the ornament.

4. Shade and add details
Add light shading on one side to give it a 3D look, and include highlights (I added star highlights) to make it appear shiny.

Tips on Drawing an Ornament
Start with Light Guidelines
Begin your ornament drawing with very light, loose strokes. Sketch a basic circle to establish the overall shape, but don’t worry about making it perfect right away. Light guidelines allow you to adjust proportions easily without leaving harsh marks on the paper. This stage is all about setting a foundation, so keep your hand relaxed and your lines soft.
Focus on Symmetry
Ornaments are usually balanced and symmetrical, so it’s important to keep both sides even. You can lightly draw a vertical guideline through the center of the circle to help maintain symmetry. This will guide the placement of the top cap, loop, and any decorative elements, ensuring your ornament looks visually pleasing.
Build Details Gradually
Avoid jumping straight into complex patterns. First refine the basic outline of your ornament, then slowly add elements like the cap and hanging loop. Once the structure feels solid, begin layering decorative details such as stripes, waves, or dots. Building details step by step keeps your drawing clean and prevents overcrowding.
Experiment with Patterns
Ornaments are perfect for creativity. Try mixing different patterns like zigzags, swirls, stars, or geometric shapes. You can divide the ornament into sections and fill each one with a unique design. Keep the patterns consistent and balanced so they complement the overall shape instead of overwhelming it.
Use Shading for Depth
Shading brings your ornament to life. Decide on a light source and shade the opposite side slightly darker. Use gentle, curved strokes that follow the shape of the ornament to create a rounded effect. Adding a soft gradient and leaving small highlights will give your drawing a realistic, glossy appearance.
Add Finishing Touches
Once your drawing is complete, go over the final lines to make them clean and defined. Erase any unnecessary guidelines and refine small details. You can also add subtle accents like sparkles or tiny stars around the ornament to enhance its festive feel. These finishing touches make your sketch feel polished and complete.
